Lord, wash away my inequity; cleanse me from from my sin.
today I helped serve the mass.
I like to do it because it reminds me of my father.
He would often serve the mass at our little church.
It was at a time when women were not allowed on the other side of the altar.
These many years later, for me to help with this ritual,
by pouring water on the hands of the priest before consecration
brings me back to St. Francis
and to my father's faith.
I am connected both by the memory, and the ritual itself,
and both bring me comfort
and closeness to God
that comes from being at mass.
I ask God to cleanse me too,
and to wash away with forgiveness the pride of the Pharisee that is in me,
and to help me humble myself like the penitent tax collector
who would not even raise his eyes to heaven.
Wash away my inequity
and cleanse me of my sins.
